Business Process Improvement
"If it ain't broke, don't fix it." Bert Lance was the Director of the Office of Management and Budget in the Carter administration. He was quoted saying this in an interview conducted by Nation's Business magazine in May, 1977. This is the approach many businesses take when it comes to their business processes - they're working well enough, why invest the resources on changing them?
The question I always ask someone if they've said their processes are working is "How do you know?" What measurements do you collect within your processes? How do those compare with best-in-class measures? How often do exceptions occur? How disruptive are they? etc., etc., etc. In these discussions, more often than not, there is difficulty in answering these questions. If you can't answer these types of questions then you don't know if your processes are broken.
If you can't measure it, you can't improve it.
Leadership is doing the right things.
